Seven decades have passed since Prince Philip sent a letter to Queen Elizabeth II to express his full and unreserved love for her. They never left each other through successes and hardships from their marriage in November 1947 until the passing of the Duke of Edinburg in April 2021. Here is some of the remarkable timeline of their one great love:
Their First Meeting In July 1939
Elizabeth’s parents, King George and Queen Mother Elizabeth asked Philip, who was 18 at the time, to accompany Elizabeth and Margaret on a tour of the Royal Naval College. This was their second encounter with each other since they met at the wedding of Princess Marina and Prince George. Elizabeth, aged 13 at the time, and Philip started writing each other letters and fell in love with each other.
Their Royal Wedding In November 1947
In a low-key wedding that reflected the post-World War II austerity in Britain, the royal couple exchanged vows at Westminster Abbey in front of about 2,000 guests. The queen looked stunning in a sophisticated white satin dress designed by Sir Norman Hartnell. It had a floor-length paneled skirt, a fitted bodice, and a 15-foot train. It was embellished with 10,000 seed pearls and crystals that were imported from the United States of America. They spent their honeymoon at Balmoral, a Scottish royal estate.
The Birth Of Their Four Children
Their children’s births were as follows: King (Prince) Charles in November 1948, Princess Anne in August 1950, Prince Andrew in February 1960, and Prince Edward in March 1964. The birth of their four children gives them the kind of happiness that no one could ever replace. Even though Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip do not see their children as much as they would like due to their duties, their relationship is cordial.
Their Gold Wedding Anniversary In November 1997
Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip had a lunch celebration at the Banqueting House in London to commemorate their 50th wedding anniversary. With her husband, she said, “He has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years, and I, and his whole family, and this and many other countries, owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim, or we shall ever know.”
Their 73rd Wedding Anniversary: Before Prince Philip Died
The long-married couple was pictured looking at the cards their great-grandchildren, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, gave them to mark the event ahead of their 73rd wedding anniversary. Months later, Prince Philip has rested. The Queen celebrated her 95th birthday alone a few days following her husband’s funeral. She stated that even though her family is going through a time of profound sadness, they are thankful for all the tributes given to her husband.
